Quoting lines from other books in your story

I want to quote a few lines from a book for my story. If it gets published, would I encounter any problems for having done this? Do I need permission or do I just make sure it is appropriately acknowledged or credited in the story?
It's a necessary step to get permission from the author or publisher. You can send them a faxed agreement and have them fax back a signed copy. You can also send them an email. As long as you provide a by-line.
