genres....
As writers, we all love to read. What's your favorite genre to read? I'd love to hear your favorites!
I am currently working on a memoir of my life as a widow. I pitched the book at a conference in November and received positive feedback from an agent on the quality of writing. I have read and studied current memoirs, many of which have been written by famous people with a noteworthy platform. Any suggestions for how an "unknown" author can get noticed in the memoir market?
Hi Diane,
All newbie authors aren't known. Except for prominent individuals who decide to venture on publishing. With the kind of market that you are about to penetrate, it would be best if you establish relationships via social networking sites. You can set-up a fan page (via Facebook) and post blurbs about your book. It would also be effective if you take time to participate on discussions and forums on author communities that concentrates on your genre.

Diane,
I hope you have great success in publishing your memoirs. I sometimes think that memoirs are a more competetive market than fiction in terms of number written versus number published. At a literary competition last summer I was told that over 80% of the non-fiction entries were memoirs as well as nearly all the short non-fiction entries. I hope you can land a great publisher.
I have published some resources for memoir writers on-line. If you can use them, please do. You'll find How To Write Memoirs lessons and worksheets and Remembers When, a place to self-publish memoirs on-line. Please feel free to make use of whatever resources are there that you find helpful.

As a reviewer and marketer for AllBooks,I enjoy all genres. I am an avid reader.
I have read from Asimov to Zola. My reading library looks like any public library as far as book genres are concerned.
If it is well written in my opinion, I will read it.

I always love to read psychology books. I'm also fond of fiction and travel. There's just a lot to read. :)
Things have changed over the years, Chuck. My preference in reading material seems to change as well. Fifteen years ago I read almost exclusively fantasy with a smattering of sci fi and the occasional mystery. Five years ago I was reading a lot more mysteries and a little spy thriller, but was scarcely ever picking up a sci fi or fantasy. I picked up Sue Grafton's U is for Undertow before Christmas and then realized that I'd never gotten around to reading T is for Trespass. Sue has been one of my favorite authors for years in the mystery genre. I just can't get into reading T, though. I've tried, read a few pages then set it down. Go back a week later and pick it up for a few pages and set it down. Suddenly, those mysteries that I loved just aren't rocking my boat and I'm looking at more intellectual and literary material. Can't believe how much it changes.
