how much drama needed

Conflict and drama can come from many things, from situations, ideas, and people, but how much emotional drama and conflict do we need in a story and how much is too much?

Example from Moss Hart
I'll try to recall this well, but the example comes from "ACT I," the autobiography of Moss Hart. While working on his first Broadway musical comedy, he'd made every line funny. The audience was so exhausted with their laughing that by the last act they didn't laugh at all. He needed quiet time in between so people could recover and enjoy the last bit. Emotion in writing is much the same.

Only enough to tell the
Only enough to tell the story. Gratuitous anything ruins the story.
Drama, I think, should be weighed in with how much it requires for the reader to be enthralled.
