Amazon recently introduced a new way of reading to the wireless generation. The device called "Kindle" can store over 1,500 books. It's really amazing how technology can make a thousand and one ways to reach out readers. Kindle is like a a slim library. Library within your hands.

Kindle is an interesting

Kindle is an interesting device, and probably the best-known eReader on the market today. Amazon recently indicated that their eBook sales this year were as big as their print sales, which is saying quite a bit.

Kindle is only one, however, of an increasingly competitive market of eReaders that all offer hundreds of thousands or even millions of eBooks. The most recent addition to that collection was Barnes & Noble's Nook. Sony's eReader just came out in a touch-screen edition and a pocket-sized version. Just three weeks ago, Skiff, LLC announced a new reading system backed by dozens of publishers that include magazine and newspaper publishers.

If you are interested in what is going on in the eBook and eReader industry, follow the news from the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) happening later this week. This year, for the first time, CES has a section of the show devoted to eBooks and eReaders. Plastic Logic will announce its Que wireless eBook. This quote is from today's Minneapolis Star/Tribune (http://www.startribune.com/science/80537392.html?elr=KArks:DCiUo3PD:3D_V...)

"For the first time, e-book readers will have their own section of the show floor, with 23 exhibitors hoping to follow Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle to the cusp of the mainstream. Though a reading device like Barnes & Noble Inc.'s Nook costs $259, a lot more than a single book, it provides access to e-books that are cheaper than the printed versions, largely thanks to Amazon's aggressive pricing policies."

I'm confident that there will be many exciting announcements in the eBook industry this week.

Tried a Kindle

I've checked out the Kindle, but decided against buying it. I'm not fond of the keyboard on the device, which makes it feel more like a Web surfing tool than a book-reading tool. I chose the Sony eReader 505 for my personal device and have been very pleased with it. When it developed a screen problem, Sony replace it and there has been no further difficulty. I also use Adobe Digital Editions for reading eBooks on my computer. It has a good interface and the added benefit of showing multiple columns or facing pages on a larger screen. Finally, I've had my hands on the new Skiff Reader that was announced this week as part of CES (Computer Electronics Show) and I'm really impressed with what they are doing and love both the touch screen and magazine layout on the bigger device.

Hope that's helpful.
