novel structure

What's the most effective way to read a novel? There are people who tell me to read a novel using this pace: middle, ending, beginning, middle (again), 3rd half, then ending. Is this true? or is it even done?
I heard about that reading style. But usually, reading a novel comes effective when you jot down footnotes by chapter. In that way, you can carefully take details of each character and understand the storyline. I read my novels from the first page up to the last.
