I think the key in winning self-marketing on books is having a strategic marketing plan. One would just have to plan out and jot down everything. Having a lot of contacts is important too. It also pays to listen on advices from marketing enthusiasts. Sharing ideas and suggestions with fellow authors is also a great advantage.
